Preparation: packing bicycle and experimenting on how to cook rice

Packing bicycle

It’s only two days away from departure. The only thing I have to do before I start my journey is to pack my bicycle. 5 years ago when I traveled Japan, I went to GAINT chain store and ask them to pack my bike for me. Despite the cheap service fee (7 US$ that time) for packing bicycle, their service was quite good. So I choose GAINT again.

I have called them to make sure they are still providing packing service 1 month ago, the staff told me that I have to call them again 1 week before I bring my bike to the store so they can keep empty box for me, and bring my bike at least 2 day before the departure day.

This morning, I check and tune my bike then head to GAINT. The staff check the condition and equipment quickly and charge me 10 US$. Unfortunately, they do not provide shipping-to-airport service.

Experimenting on how to cook rice with camping stove

5 years ago when I was traveling In Japan, in order to keep daily expenses low I ate toast and drink cheap milk almost every day. Soon I found that I lost my sanity gradually 4 months after I started my journey because of malnutrition.

I was not short of money in fact, I just wanted to keep daily expenses as low as possible. But this time I have no choice. If I were to travel with the budget of 10,000 US$, I just had to limit my expenses.

Instead of eating toast, I think cooking rice and spaghetti will keep me from malnutrition. Cooking spaghetti is easy, but cooking rice with camping stove needs some technique and experiences. So I think I have to try weather the method I have learned from internet works or not, and check if the brand new stove function well or not.

Here is how I cooked. It’s not the best way to cook rice. I still have lots of chances to figure it out…
 1.      Wash rice. Add water into the inner cooker with rice in the ratio 1:1. Wait for 30 minutes or so.
2.      Pour water into outer cooker and keep outer cooker wet during cooking. Put a weight(ex: stone) on the top of outer cooker, cook on a high flame.( cook for 3 minutes and water boiled)

3.      Keep cooking for a while. (cook for 7 minutes this time)
4.    Open and cover the cooker as fast as possible to check if rice is well cooked. Turn off and wait for a while.(wait for 30 minutes this time)
Result: a little bit sticky,, probably put too much water(1:1.3), but taste fine.

Budget & Travel plan

Budget

I have done some researches on how much money a round world trip costs after I resolved to travel around the world. The answer is it depends on how I travel and what kind of life standard I expect to have. Here(Round the World Travel Budgets Revealed: The Real Costs of 11 Real Trips) is an article shows the cost of a round the travel based on 11 travelers' real experiences. According to my own experiences, it costs 48 US$/day and 25 US$/day or so in Japan and China(including airplane tickets, bicycle parts...etc.).

After reading the article I mentioned above and calculating how much I spent last two time I traveled, I start to realize it unrealistic to try to travel around the world for me, because all the money I have now is 10,000 US$ or so. And I plan to study Spanish in South America for about 4 months and go to Antarctic, that makes my plan seems impossible. Some people have tried to  travel around the world with 10,000 US$ budget but ended up being trapped in the middle of their journey(http://www.twoguysaroundtheworld.com/travelbudget/). Even so, I would rather say it is impossible after I have tried than give up before I even try. I will just go and see, and try to keep my expenses under 10 US$/day.

A bike journey from Arctic to Antarctica...or around the world?

A bike journey from Arctic to Antarctica...or around the world?

When I was a kid, I was always curious about what kind of life people are living on the other side of the world.  Born in an poor family, I hadn't had a chance to travel aboard until I was 26. The first time I went abroad the destination was Japan  in 2007. To better understand the culture of Japan and see details, I decided to travel around Japan with bicycle.  Soon, I was hooked on the feeling of slow-passe travelling, which probably only by bicycle can enjoy. Then in 2010, I resolved to bike from Xiamen to Tibet. And this time I am going to cross America from Arctic to Antarctica with my old bicycle, or even around the world if I have enough money after I arrive in Brasil.

Blogging in English

After I decided to travel around Japan, an ideal came to my mind that it would be a good ideal to write diary while I am travelling. Human being's memorizing ability is far from perfect. Memory will fade as time goes by. I don't want to leave nothing after the journey is over, so I started to write diary in Chinese from the first day of my journey. I also think that it is unsafe if I just wrote my diary in a notebook, or stored in my own laptop. So I put it on Google, which I think that probably every word I write will never disappear unless a gigantic meteoroid or a global scale solar storm hit the earth.

2 weeks after my journey began, I found my Chinese writing ability had improved dramatically, and 6 months later when my journey ended, lots of my blog followers told me my article is so beautiful that they think I can write a book(perhaps they are just being polite though). This is one of the reasons why I started to blog in English.(Trying to make money from Google Adsense is also one of the reasons.) BUT I don't know if it is too ambitious to write diary in three languages(Chinese, English and Japanese) everyday after riding 50 mile per day in average. If it doesn't work, I will just keep the articles short. If it still doesn't work, then I will just write in Chinese, and in English when possible.

PS: English is not my first language, you may find plenty of grammatical mistakes, incorrect usages of vocabularies or something offensive...etc. Any advice will be appreciated.
