Day 54-55: Whitehorse to Marsh Lake, Yukon, Canada

I didn’t plan to stay at Marsh Lake, but I was fascinated by the scenery here and decided to stay here for 2 days as soon as I saw the lake.

Day 51-53: Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada

Staying at Warm Show hosts’ places is a great experience so far. I used to travel alone and refuse any invitation even someone bagged me to stay at their place. But I changed my mind recently. It is better way to travel if I can create opportunity to interact with some people, who I would have never met in my life, and learn and see how other people live their life and how they think about the world. And the experience of staying at Jesse, Philippe and Jason’s place makes me think that I am right.

This crankset has done about 20.000 km, and now it's broken finally.

Have my bike fixed. It cost me 100 CAD to fix the crank set(replace the 3 rings)

I was not interested in brewing coffee before. But Jesse and Philippe have coffee bean and everything I need to brew coffee, so I decided to learn how to brew coffee.

Beer! Haven't had beer for about one month and I miss the taste. 

Cooking ability will improve as the time of traveling gets longer.

Day 41-50 : Fairbanks, Alaska, US to Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada

Tent was broken in the first day I left Fairbanks.

I missed the most beautiful moment because my camera is not water-proof. I should have bought a water-proof one... 

I need protein!!

In Alaska high way, there is nothing but trees.

OH! And trailers!

And...squirrels.

It's a torture to see some people enjoy wine when the best things I have are eggs and instant noodle.  

A visit center about 10 km away from US-CA boarder. Every pin represents a visitor passed here. I am the first Taiwanese this year. 

Canada! I am coming!

I scared a bear again.

What a coincident! I met David and his wife in Canada. They were on their way back to Anchorage. 

I forgot I don't have a can-opener and bought a pineapple can. Well, pick a rock, and use it as a hammer. Done!

Try to use stove to bake bread. 

Two squirrels tried to steal my breakfast.

The prices of food raise dramatically right after I crossed the boarder of Canada. A pack of instant noodle costed me 1.75 CAD! 

A pack of eggs took me 5.95! But I still had to buy because I need protein so badly.

Hot! Hot! Hot!

After suffering from sunburn, bug bites, 200 km of strong and consistent headwind...etc.,  finally, I arrived in Whitehorse!  

Day 36-40: Fairbanks

the rim is ruined.

        My bike and I were covered with mud when I arrived at Duncan’s home yesterday. Duncan was on his vacation down south with his families but he told me that I am free to get into his house before I headed to Deadhorse. I left all the staff I didn’t need and plan to grab and leave after I arrived in Fairbanks, but I though that I had to clean all the mess and maintain my bike before I leave Fairbanks.

But I found that my front wheel could not rotate at all and rear wheel also could not rotate smoothly. I tried to fix it myself but was not be able to find the tools I needed. So all I could do was to wait Duncan to come back and ask for help.

It turns out that not only Duncan is a pilot but an airplane mechanic, so I think it’s a piece of cake for Duncan to fix a broken bike. We (well, actually he) started to fix two broken wheels 5 hours after Duncan arrived at home.He took only 3 hours to fix the wheels, which I spent 3 days to figure out how to fix and couldn’t ultimately, and saved me at least 100 dollars to buy a new wheel set.

Day 22- 35: Fairbanks to Arctic ocean

I have been through 2 harsh weeks in Dalton HWY. But I am also surprised by all of the kind people I met on my way to Dearhorse. Some people stopped and asked if I need any help, water or food, even I didn’t ask for help. I was even treated a huge steak by some people when I had trouble finding water and a place to camp.

I started from Fairbanks with only 4 saddle bags and a camera, but came back with more bags and lots of food left because of people’s generosity there. If it was not for people’s generosity, I would have ran out of my food on my way to Deadhorse and gotten myself in troubles.

On my way back to Fairbanks the weather suddenly changed. It snowed like crazy , the fog was so heavy that I even could not see 10 yards away, and the wind was so strong that I even could not stand on the roadside to wait for a lift longer than 30 minutes. Then I realized human are so vulnerable in front of Mother Nature, especially in the harsh environment like Alaska. People have to learn how to help each other, otherwise would not be able to survive here. I guess this is the reason why people share their food and water for no reason. Just like Tibetans, they share their food even without asking your name or where are you from.

Yes. The beauties of nature and wild life in Dalton high way are awesome and magnificent, but the warm hearts moved me more than any other things.

After standing on the roadside for 4 hours with frozen fingers and toes, finally I got a ride.

Camp in Toolik lake. My tent had broken, so I built a makeshift  tent with my bike as frame for one night.

On my way back to Fairbanks, a truck driver saw me riding in the this kind of weather and felt "sorry for me". So he decided to give a lift back to Fairbanks.
